The best chestnut honey in Greece is produced in the protected chestnut groves of Mount Athos. Unique for its properties, with an intense, peppery flavour, special aroma, less sweet flavour from other types of honey and a slightly bitter aftertaste. Chestnut honey is rich in trace elements, such as potassium, magnesium, manganese, barium, as well as fructose and tannins. It has a dark colour, an intense wood and a slight tannin aroma (it is the tannin from the plant, of which traces are found in the honey). Its taste is definitely distinctive, mildly sweet with a slightly bitter aftertaste and is preferred by people who do not like sugar. It crystallizes only after a long time, 1.5 – 2 years. It induces perspiration, contributes to blood circulation and has stimulant effects. Additionally, it has disinfectant and healing properties, which are especially useful for the urinary and digestive system. It can also act as a styptic agent in case of dysentery. Recommended to people who exercise, elderly people and people suffering from prostate or prostatitis problems.
